Silverwood Miners Welfare and Resource Centre Fights Back

Silverwood Miners Welfare and Resource Centre

silverwood the streetSilverwood Miners Welfare in the Dalton area of Rotherham, South Yorkshire originates from May 1924 when it began life as a small building for Silverwood Colliery meetings.  Later the Welfare was built as a recreational establishment for miners and their families.  This was opened in February 1959 by the president of the club, Mr Fred Green and Mr Alan Wilde a Trustee.

Most people called the welfare the 'Baggin' which was named after a tool used at the pit.  It is still called the ‘Baggin' today by local people.

The bar is open every evening and Saturday and Sunday lunch times and the recently refurbished club facilities are remarkable if not unique.  The Fred Green Lounge boasts comfortable seating areas in a subtly lit atmosphere. There is a full size snooker table and pool table, juke box, gaming machines, television, projector and screen for the entertainment of members. The welcoming Steward and Stewardess are on hand to cater for whatever drink you require with the lounge being the perfect place to relax.

The Silverwood Suite is the ideal venue for parties, weddings, anniversaries etc.  It has a large stage with 2 changing rooms and if you decide to have entertainment at your special event it also has its own fully equipped bar. Two double fire exit doors lead out onto a large patio area.

The interesting diversion from the normal expectations are those of the Resource Centre.  This is open every day from Monday to Friday for businesses wishing to hire the rooms for conferences/meetings etc.  Silverwood Miners Welfare Resource Centre represents a new era in the social, recreational and community life of Dalton and the surrounding areas. The welfare has had an extensive refurbishment and is able to support groups, individuals and businesses by providing a venue and facilities of the highest possible standards at very competetive prices. Silverwood also caters for the disabled with disabled facilities and parking.

The Hall (Silverwood Suite)
The large conference hall boasts superb conference facilities and can accommodate up to 230 delegates. Refreshments can be ordered at a small cost and catering phone numbers are available if you require buffets.

Additional equipment is available at no extra cost e.g. flip chart stands, screen, projector etc.

The centre administrator is on hand at all times to ensure you have everything you need for the smooth running of your event.

The IT Suite
The IT Suite has 15 computers and has access to the internet and a wide variety of computer silverwood it suitepackages. Whether you are interested in just the basics or more advanced courses we have the computer packages for you! Just call our administrator for more information about courses.

The IT Suite is also available as a meeting room for smaller groups up to a maximum of 25 people.

Other Rooms
We also have 2 other rooms which, at the moment, are being leased as offices on a yearly basis by local businesses.

We have 2 rooms available to lease as office space.

Whatever your needs and requirements you will find Silverwood to be a venue of exceptional quality and versatility.

Car Parking
There are 60 free parking spaces available including disabled parking.

Silverwood Miners Welfare stands in 4.11 hectares of lush green land. It is ideal for all kinds of sporting events.

Football
We have 2 football pitches which are used every weekend during the football season by local clubs. Rotherham United Girls have made Silverwood their home and play their matches here every Saturday during the football season also Rotherham United Ladies train here sometimes too.

The changing rooms have been refurbished thanks to the hard work of Rotherham United Girls parents who joined forces to ensure the girls and other users of the changing rooms have good facilities. We are currently applying for funding to build new changing rooms as trees have caused some damage to the roof which in turn has caused damage to the inside of the building.

Bowls
We have our own bowling green which is kept to a high standard as we have resident teams who play here every season. The pavilion is well equipped with all the facilities the teams need to have a enjoyable day bowling.

Cricket
We have a cricket square at the bottom of the football pitches which is marked out when needed or used as a five aside pitch.

Future Facilities
We are hoping to have 2 astra turf pitches and floodlighting in the future dependant on funding we are applying for.
