Cockle man

Who remembers the cockle man?

Can you remember the cockle man?

I haven’t seen the guy for absolutely ages.  He used to be ever so popular dressed in his white jacket carrying a wicker basket full of all sorts of goodies.  Originally it was cockles, and maybe other fishy things, in a paper bag with an optional squeeze or two of vinegar eaten with a wooden fork.  They used to go down a treat.

In later years he carried crab sticks and sweets and then spread into exotic onion bhajis.

Where is he nowadays?  Has he retired to the South of France with a vast fortune?  Or has he been the subject of the food hygiene inspectors or heath and safety brigade?

Carry on Cabaret have managed to keep the memory of the cockle man alive and included him as “The Demented Cockle Man”  in their fabulous act.
